Writing a letter to the editor of your local newspaper can be a very effective way to influence public opinion and get the attention of legislators who are making decisions affecting your family. Most of the letters sent in are published and in many cases, inspire other letters that can generate a lively public discussion on an issue. Writing the Letter Many people would like to write a letter to the editor of their local paper, but for some, the idea seems intimidating. Writing a letter to the editor is actually very easy. You can write about relevant state or local issues or you might want to respond to a recent article or published letter. Typically, your letter will have a better chance at being published if you reference a previous story or letter with which you may have agreed or disagreed. This isn't always the case, however. Here are a few key points to keep in mind:
Submitting the Letter Below we have provided a list of Alaskan newspapers. We suggest that you write a letter to your local newspaper and maybe another to the Anchorage Daily News as it has by far the widest circulation. Select a newspaper below you’d like to submit a letter to and you'll be taken to its Letter to the Editor page or to its main page (links open in a new window). Every newspaper has unique guidelines that should be followed to ensure your letter will be considered. Please follow them carefully. Thank you again for your willingness to become involved in our vital effort to strengthen and protect Alaskan families. Please call or email our offices at any time with questions or concerns.
