"Christians are not free to abandon the social implications of their faith and then gasp in amazement at the ugliness of cultural collapse." This statement, made by John Whitehead, President of the Rutherford Institute, accurately describes the position the Alaska Family Council takes regarding our responsibility to be salt and light in a fallen world. Once we have come to grips with our own sin nature (Romans 3:23), we inevitably begin to focus on the fact that our society and culture are also seriously flawed. Ultimately, we must then realize that God is prodding each and every one of us to be transforming agents in all aspects of our lives - including how we engage in matters of civic duty and public policy. The Christian view of love and compassion should compel each of us to stand for what is right and address what is wrong in our communities. Edmond Burke noted some 250 years ago that "All that is necessary for evil to prevail in the world is for good men to do nothing." William Wilburforce stands as a shining example in how he worked tirelessly for more than two decades, often as a lone and ridiculed voice, to eradicate his country (Britain) of the stain of slavery. As Jesus noted, "Light is meant to shine in the darkness." A critical part of our submission to government is to hold our public officials accountable to a higher law - the law of God.
